I do have some problems with this book, mainly a lot of plot related issues with it. I think of the first three books she wrote this is my least favorite of TMI series so far for me. I do like some of the characters (Magnus Bane being predominant), and the whole idea about shadowhunters is interesting. I find my biggest problem is that this is her first book, but the others do get better at points (and worst in some plot related issues). If anything, the third book of the series is the best in my mind. She has a tendency to describe eyelashes, which is a bit weird in my opinion when describing people. It's a little bit of a turn off for me, but luckily it's not in the whole book. Just a random off-putting problem for me. The whole incest thing, is well--not to spoil it--but it's not what you think it is. If you read to the third book you'll know what I mean. Because that did bother me, but I kept on reading for the other characters. It's a fast paced book, and a fan of urban fantasy will probably enjoy it. Just don't have these high standards that it is some amazing work of literature because it's not. It's popcorn, indulgent, but a fun read. If you keep that in mind, you'll probably like it. In my mind, read this book then the second and the third is by far the best.
